The study of theology is the cornerstone of all
intellectual endeavors because the truths that theology
considers are the highest - and at the same time the
deepest - truths about God and man.

No matter what your future service to the
Church or to the world, studies in theology provide
the key dimension for fruitful and authentic
evangelization.

Catechetical Institute

Welcome to The Catechetical Institute, offering adult Catholic catechesis for those interested in growing in knowledge of the faith, and catechist training for those who teach the faith.

The Catechetical Institute offers stress-free, non-credit coursework for those who are interested in learning about the Catholic faith. The course is designed to provide catechesis in a classroom setting that will engage the adult learner and propel him/her to deeper studies in Catholic Theology. Classes are offered at various locations throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Catechetical Institute courses are also offered completely online. Course content is delivered through power point presentations with audio lecture, review questions, discussions, opportunities for live chat sessions.

The Program

The Catechetical Institute was created with the adult learner in mind. Knowledgeable faculty teach the faith from an adult perspective, and use examples from everyday life to illustrate the faith in action. The beauty of the faith shines through as one sees its relevance for every aspect of life.

At the heart of the Catholic faith is the dynamic relationship between God and humanity, both communally and individually. The basis of that relationship is love. The more one loves God, the more one wants to know about Him; as knowledge grows, so does love. As we come to learn of the great power of God and His wondrous works, our faith deepens, and our lives are filled with hope, the kind of hope that, as our Holy Father reminds us, can only come from Christ.

The primary sources for the curriculum in The Catechetical Institute are the Holy Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The Curriculum:

The curriculum of The Catechetical Institute reflects this relationship between Sacred Scripture and the Tradition of the Church. Eight core courses cover basic content in Scripture, doctrine, worship, and the moral life, demonstrating an integration of the faith into every aspect of life. These courses include:

Overview of the Old Testament
Overview of the New Testament
The Person of Jesus
Foundations of the Church
Sacraments of Initiation
Sacraments of Healing and of Vocation
Christian Anthropology
Catholic Moral Teachings

In addition, electives are offered in various fields of theology. Many of them are a part of a greater "series". For example, we have courses in our "Catholic Spirituality Series" or our "Fathers of the Church" series. These courses seek to supplement core courses, and allow for those who have completed the core curriculum to continue learning.
