The study of theology is the cornerstone of all
intellectual endeavors because the truths that theology
considers are the highest - and at the same time the
deepest - truths about God and man.

No matter what your future service to the
Church or to the world, studies in theology provide

THE ROMAN CATECHETICAL DIPLOMA

Offered through the Congregation for the Clergy, Rome

The diploma you need to know and teach the Catholic faith.

With the approval of the Congregation for the Clergy, the Seminary grants an undergraduate diploma to those students who have completed twenty-four credits in the area of Catholic Theology, certifying that they are academically trained catechists in conformity with the principles of the General Catechetical Directory.

A student who earns this diploma will be recognized in a yearly letter which is sent to the Vatican, indicating the student's achievement and recorded in the Vatican Catechetical archives.

This program has been established in accord with the General Catechetical Directory published by the Congregation for the Clergy in 1971. Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, through its Religious Studies Division, has undertaken the task of the catechetical formation of its students. The Seminary recognizes the need for continuing theological formation in doctrinal, anthropological and methodological matters, and the reception of this diploma recognizes such formation.

The curriculum for the Roman Catechetical Diploma includes the following requirements:

One course in the Old Testament
One course in the New Testament
One course in Theology
One course in Moral Theology
Four electives

The program totals twenty-four credits and can be completed both in the traditional classroom and through our online learning program.

Transfer credits attained outside the Seminary are not applicable to the Roman Catechetical Diploma.

Certificate in Catholic Theology

In addition to our Roman Catechetical Diploma, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, in cooperation with the Office of Catholic Education, Secretariat for Catholic Education, Archdiocese of Philadelphia, offers a Certificate in Catholic Theology. The program is designed to foster greater knowledge and deeper appreciation of the Catholic faith and amounts to eighteen undergraduate theology credits. Courses taken more than six years before the request is made or in which a grade of at least “C” has not been attained will not be accepted in transfer. Requests to transfer credits should be directed to the Academic Dean.

The program should be completed within a three-year period, pending the availability of the required courses. Credits accumulated from courses taken more than six years past are not accepted toward the awarding of the certificate.
